- Over the last two months, mortgage rates have defied the expectations of many experts and trended solidly downward. Much of the downward pressure has come from pessimistic equity markets rather than actual negative economic data.
- The US economy remains in growth mode and will likely continue to expand during 2019. The probability is that we will experience slower growth, and someday in the future, the next recession will occur.
- While much discussion has transpired regarding “re-normalizing” financial markets, the minutes of the last Fed meeting reiterated that the Fed remains committed to being responsive to economic data as it sets monetary policy.
- This week could see mortgage rates moving either direction. If the government shutdown ends, it is likely that equity markets would rally on the news, helping push rates higher.
- A continuation of the shutdown will mean some economic data is not released. This coupled with below expectation results from other data would almost certainly create some downward pressure on all interest rates.
It Looks Easy on TV… What Could Go Wrong?
Whether it’s cooking or home remodeling, things on TV are often portrayed as much easier and faster than in real life. According to ImproveNet, an average homeowner attempts about 8 DIY house projects. About a third of those owners end up hiring a pro to finish or redo at least one of the jobs. Over half admitted that the projects took longer than expected and didn’t look near as good as they expected. 8% of DIY of owners ended up damaging their own home!
